This work began from traces left inside old public phone booths in Seongsu-dong. Peeling stickers and faded marks, where their original function could no longer be recognized, were reconstructed through textile. Fragments of time that had accumulated over long periods remained layered across the surface. It becomes difficult to distinguish what existed first, what was later covered over, or which traces belonged to which moment, revealing compressed remnants of Seongsu’s aged passage of time. The work is primarily composed of dark black threads, interrupted by flashes of metallic reflection. Depending on the light, the surface repeatedly appears and disappears, while moments of intense reflection suddenly emerge. Although these scenes seem newly composed, beneath the surface different layers of time and sensation remain uneasily intertwined. The peeled sticker marks left inside old public phone booths mirror the contradictory state of Seongsu itself. Things are repeatedly covered, erased, and rewritten, yet traces inevitably remain. This work attempts to reveal how such processes continue to be consumed and reconstructed, while simultaneously accumulating as a single layered surface of sensation.

EUM Hyunchul studied hotel management in Switzerland and later majored in film in Korea. After working across film, advertising, music videos, and as an MTV Creative Director, he developed his own distinct way of observing and interpreting images through these diverse experiences. For him, tufting is not simply a craft technique, but a way of transforming images and sensations into tangible surfaces. The repetitive hand movements, density, and subtle differences in texture become a method of constructing the surface like a painting, while at the same time revealing a strong sense of materiality similar to sculpture.
