Han Sang-a’s work is rooted in the experiences and emotions she encounters as an artist, a woman, and an individual. Rather than organizing the feelings and memories she has navigated through pivotal moments in life into a coherent narrative, Han embraces their fragmented and contradictory nature, expressing them through her own distinct visual language. Using ink—a medium she describes as deeply responsive to her body—Han creates images that she then cuts and stitches together to complete her works. The resulting “painted sculptures” are both two-dimensional and three-dimensional, existing at the intersection of painting and sculpture. Just as her autobiographical narrative—centered on balancing roles as a woman, a mother, and an individual—leads to a broader understanding of the inherent instability and incompleteness of human existence, her “painted sculptures” expand beyond the boundaries of painting and sculpture, plane and form.
