Standing before Park Wonjoo’s work, our gaze transforms into a tactile sense, moving restlessly. The glass of the frame, which should be transparent, and its undulating, contoured structure create an unfamiliar surface whose rippling presence generates a “gap” in the air. Through this gap, an in-between space—a space of adjacency—emerges between the work and ourselves. It becomes a space where the possibility of being fitted to one another arises, like pieces of a puzzle. Instinctively, we send a fragment of our sharpened senses into this opening. We are seized by a tickling impatience and urgency—the desire to quickly touch, meet, and grasp the work. Drawn in by this sensation, we approach the piece boldly, moving our bodies in all directions as we engage with it.

The picture frame's glass, which ought to be transparent, and its curved frame—the unsettling undulation of that unfamiliar surface—create a 'gap' in the air. As a result, a 'beside' space is immediately formed between the artwork and me. An opportunity arises for us to be fitted together, much like puzzle pieces. Instinctively, we send a fragment of our 'raw' sensibility through that gap, and are quickly seized by the tickle and urgency of wanting to touch and hold the work, prompting us to boldly step closer and move our bodies around in all directions to appreciate it. The works of Wonjoo Park placed before us always have the appearance of being tenderly caressed. To achieve this, the artist bends glass at high temperatures in her studio, breaks wooden pieces into fragments only to reassemble them, and handles cast iron. She wishes to downplay and minimize the mention of the hardship involved in the process of wearing down these raw, rough edges. This particular preference, in return, grants Park Wonjoo's work its unique expression. The artwork, solely in order to approach us softly, appears as if much has already been resolved and reconciled, or it embodies the will for such resolution. - Hayoon Kim

Colorbeat presents curated exhibitions centered on the works of contemporary artists, serving as an experimental exhibition space where current sensibilities and social contexts are articulated through art. Rather than being confined to specific media, the gallery organically highlights a wide range of practices—including painting, sculpture, installation, and video—while offering in-depth insight into the attitudes and critical perspectives of artists living and working in our time. In particular, Colorbeat actively discovers and supports emerging artists who work freely across media, providing ongoing exhibition opportunities and fostering critical discourse to encourage their long-term growth. By focusing not only on completed works but also on artistic processes and trajectories of thought, the gallery enables visitors to engage with art in a more layered and immersive way. Beyond mere appreciation, each exhibition functions as an open platform for collectively exploring the possibilities of contemporary art.
