About the work

This work originates from the vertical and horizontal structures explored by minimalist artist Donald Judd. Focusing on the balance and tension created by freely flowing lines within an ordered framework, I expand these ideas into painting. By adding an installed frame onto the painting, I introduce depth to what was once a flat surface, encouraging viewers to engage not only with the image but also with its structure and surrounding space. The frame functions not as a simple boundary but as an integral part of the artwork, revealing the back and structural elements of the painting that usually remain unseen. My current experience working within a furniture brand has also influenced this practice. Moving beyond the beauty of form, I am interested in the structures and methods of connection that support objects. Through this work, I propose a spatial experience in which image and structure coexist and collectively shape perception.

YeonJae Chung(b. 1992) explores contrast as the central concept of her practice. As both a painter and a graphic designer, and having spent her childhood moving between the United States and South Korea, she developed a sensibility shaped by differing cultures and languages. She focuses on the tension and balance created by opposing elements such as horizontal and vertical, light and shadow, clarity and blur. Contrast functions in her work as both a visual device that evokes emotion and a framework through which objects are perceived and judged. Observing the points where logical and illogical elements intersect, she reconstructs everyday phenomena into abstract forms. By examining the gaps and relationships that arise from the combination of disparate elements, her practice expands across painting, objects, and furniture.
