This work reconstructs the surfaces and traces discovered in old alleyways through textile. Repeated layers of thread create surfaces that resemble cracks in walls, peeled paint, or traces left behind over long periods of time. Different textures overlap and collide within a single surface, making it difficult to distinguish what has disappeared and what still remains. The work continuously moves between order and collapse. Certain areas appear densely woven and structured, while others seem loosened, unraveled, and unstable. Threads that absorb light and those that reflect it coexist together, causing the surface to shift subtly depending on the viewing angle and surrounding light. Rather than restoring the city’s old surfaces exactly as they once were, the work focuses on reconstructing the sensations and fragments of time embedded within them. The surface becomes a place where traces that have faded, disappeared, and accumulated over time continue to coexist.

EUM Hyunchul studied hotel management in Switzerland and later majored in film in Korea. After working across film, advertising, music videos, and as an MTV Creative Director, he developed his own distinct way of observing and interpreting images through these diverse experiences. For him, tufting is not simply a craft technique, but a way of transforming images and sensations into tangible surfaces. The repetitive hand movements, density, and subtle differences in texture become a method of constructing the surface like a painting, while at the same time revealing a strong sense of materiality similar to sculpture.
